The state police said that four people, all of whom were children or teenagers, were killed and many others were injured on Monday when a car was crashed into the post -school center in Chatham, Illinois, a village south of Springfield.
The Illinois Police Department said in a press statement that the victims believed that 18 years old and younger.
The police said that the car hit three victims outside the building and the other inside. The authorities said that many others were taken to the hospital, and at least one person was transferred.
Illinois police spokeswoman Melanie Arnold said there was no additional information about the injuries on Monday evening or the age of the injured.
The state police said that the driver, who was not identified, was not injured and was undergoing a hospital evaluation on Monday evening. Police said that anyone else was in the car.
The state police said that the officers of the Chatham Police Department, the Chatham Fire Department and other agencies responded to a call on Monday afternoon from a car driven to Ynot after the school camp.
According to the police, the driver hit the eastern side of the building, where he hit several people outside, then continued to drive across the building, and hit more people inside before leaving the western side.
Illinois and the Chatham Police Department are investigating the accident.
Illinois JB Pritzker, his condolences to the victims and their families in a statement on Monday evening, said that his administration was watching the situation.
“Our community has lost a group of bright and innocent youth and all of their lives in front of them,” said Mr. Pritzker. “The parents said goodbye to their children this morning, they don’t know that it will be the last time. My heart is heavy for these families and the unimaginable sadness that they suffer from.”
