The city of Los Angeles must pay nearly $ 50 million to a man who was in a coma since he had a sewage truck while crossing a street in Insino, a jury decided on Thursday.
Camran Hakami, who is now 61 years old, was in a cross -corridor on Hevinhour Street and Venta Street last August when the sewage truck hit him. Al -Hakimi had a green light and a “unsafe turn” driver, according to Hakami’s lawyers.
Lawyers said that one of the drivers at the front of the truck hit the head of Al -Hakimi and put him to the asphalt, where he hit his head. Al -Hakimi stood shortly and thumbs before losing consciousness.
“The life of Mr. Hakami and his family’s life changes forever because of the neglect of the Los Angeles city employee,” said Rahul Rafipodi, a lawyer of Al -Hakimi. “This ruling supports the dignity of life that Mr. Hakami enjoys before this tragedy and we are grateful to the jury who considered all the evidence and provided Mr. Hakami the means necessary to obtain a higher level of care that he strongly needs.”
My judgment is the father of five years and worked in real estate before the accident. In October, his lawyers filed a lawsuit against the city in the Los Angeles Supreme Court.
The city admitted that the driver failed to surrender with Al -Hakimi, according to Hakami’s lawyers. But in the trial, “the city concluded the damage suffered by Mr. Hakami, on the pretext that his average age was limited and that the value of his non -economic damage, including pain, suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life, was reduced because he was in a coma.”
The City Authority has ordered the city to pay 48.8 million dollars, including $ 25 million for pain and suffering in the future and $ 10 million for future medical expenses.
The ruling, which comes with the continuation of the city in the conflict by escalating the legal responsibility payments, was greater than any batches by the city in the last two years, according to the data submitted by the city’s public prosecutor’s office. The city can still appeal.
Another lawyer from my judgment, Brian Banesh, said that the case should not have gone to trial, as the city’s lawyer, Heidi Feldchetein Soto, blamed for his refusal to settle the case.
“The city’s lawyer chose to force this case to trial, and rejected all reasonable settlement proposals … There were many reasonable proposals made by an independent mediator chosen by the city.”
Veldstein Soto, through her press office, did not respond immediately on a request for comment.
Banish echoed the arguments made by the lawyers of the prosecutors who said that the legal strategies of Vilstein Soto contributed to the high costs of legal responsibility. They claim that Feldstein Soto has taken cases of trial that it should have settled, which led to greater judgments if the city was found responsible.
The city paid a total of $ 289 million, which is the highest cost of responsibility ever, in the fiscal year 2025.
