United Nations officials said on Monday that fifteen emergency and relief workers from the Red Crescent, the Palestinian Civil Defense and the United Nations had been recovered from a grave in the sand in southern Gaza.
Tom Fletcher, head of the United Nations aid, said in a social media publication that the bodies were buried near “broken and good signs,” adding: “They were killed by the Israeli forces while trying to save lives. We ask for answers and justice.”
The Israeli army was not commented directly on the death of relief workers.
In a later statement to Reuters, he said it facilitated the evacuation of the bodies from the area, which it described as an active fighting area.
The army did not specifically answer questions about the reason for recovering the bodies under the sand, nor why the crushing vehicles were found.
Philip Lazarini, head of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA), said social media that the bodies “were ignored in shallow graves – a deep violation of human dignity.”
